about
The title came early on during the 2020 pandemic, when George was thinking about how crazy it was that health had become a political issue, and politics was becoming bad for your health. Why wasn't the crisis bringing us all together? And how does one figure out where to stand on the issues? He happened to be having a cocktail at the time he was pondering this....
When we finally decided to record new material, Drinking In Self Defense was the logical first song to tackle. The Band had already agreed on a set of Covid precautions that included holding meetings and rehearsals outside and with masks. When producer Doug Kwartler offered to bring Hollow Body Studios to us, we opted to record basic tracks in Bob's garage -- with all the doors and windows open and everyone distanced by at least 10 feet. It probably was fitting that every one of the sessions for this song were undertaken in abnormally cold temperatures.
Ironically our defense against the cold was not alcohol, but a double-headed propane space heater, whose huffing voice is captured in the recordings.
lyrics
Well I’m drinking in self-defense. . .
Chorus
I'm drinking in self defense.
This is where I stand my ground.
There’s no sugar-coating necessary, just don’t judge me down
For drinking in self-defense.
With everybody choosing sides; “you’re with me or you aint,”
It’s hard to figure out just where to stand.
But nothing can get better by just passing on the blame.
So, I just try to do the best I can.
Chorus
I used to think that no punch thrown at me could keep me down,
And I don’t need pain killers for the truth.
But the getting up gets harder every time I look around
At the same ol’, same ol’; what is there to do.
Chorus
I don’t have a party line, but it’s OK with me;
Just as long as there’s no one gets hurt.
And I believe that a good turn deserves to have a chance.
But where do you turn that stops things getting worse
Chorus
